Overview
Released on 20 May 2003 through Maverick Records, Deftones is the band's fourth studio album. Recorded between March and October 2002 at Larrabee Sound Studios in West Hollywood, Studio X in Seattle and The Spot in Sacramento, it was produced by Terry Date and Deftones. Reported to have cost around $2.5 million to make, the album continued the band's evolution with a darker, heavier and more atmospheric sound while remaining rooted in the experimentation introduced on White Pony. It also became the final Deftones album produced by Terry Date until Ohms, released in 2020.
Supported by the singles Minerva and Hexagram, along with the promotional single Bloody Cape, Deftones debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, becoming the band's highest-charting album at the time. Although it did not match the long-term commercial success of White Pony, the album was certified Gold by the RIAA and remains a major entry in the band's early-2000s catalogue.
